In a combined operation between
the
Waynesboro Police
Department and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, 34 people were arrested
Monday for the sale of illegal drugs.
Waynesboro Police
Chief Keith Reeves said 20 officers were armed with 37 felony arrest
warrants that involved 63 drug cases.
Wayne County Sheriff Ric Wilson said
the grand jury warrants were issued Friday.
As the day ended with 34 felony arrests, both Reeves and Wilson called the
joint operation a success.
"We've got a few still out, but they'll show up sooner or later. It was a
good day," Wilson said.
He said the undercover operation and roundup was "unprecedented" for Wayne
County.
"This was two agencies working together to try and make a difference in a
problem. A lot of long hours and hard work went into this, but the effort
was all worthwhile," the sheriff said.
Reeves said the roundup went off without any problems.
He said the operation began about four months ago with undercover officers
and informants making drug buys. He said every person arrested Monday is
accused of selling illegal drugs.
Wilson said the operation was an effort to do something about the county's
pill problem.
"There is a pill problem in this county, so bad that we labeled this
investigation 'Operation Bad Medicine,' " he said.
Reeves and Wilson said most of the illegal drugs confiscated included
Lortabs, Xanax or Morphine.
"There was some meth and some marijuana, but 90 percent was pills," Wilson
said.
Reeves said the operation was a way to send a message to drug dealers and
drug users.
"We want people to know we're not going to tolerate this illegal
activity," Wilson said.
"This is not going to be the last time for this kind of operation," Reeves
said.
