Early history of Wayne County is found at Goodspeed's Early History of Wayne County, 1886.  Waynesboro was founded in 1821 as a county seat for then newly created Wayne County. The city initially consisted of a 40-acre (16 ha) plot that included the courthouse and jail. A school, Ashland Academy, was established in 1843.
